International Christmas Market

Where the three streets of Strøget meet, at the stork fountain, a wonderful thing appears. A Christmas market selling things from all over the world.

Now over the last few years, Christmas markets in most cities have become more and more generic, Swarovski, Crépes, Pashmina scarves, soaps… most of them show the same stands. Not in Copenhagen though, at least not yet. This market in particular shows you beautiful Australian mother-of-pearl jewelry, intricate Swedish decorations, innovative African cosmetics, Spanish Churros, French Nougat, the best Chinese food I have had in a long time, Italian sausages, various different kinds of flavoured Danish dough balls (that stand seriously made my day first time I saw it, and I didn’t even buy any!!) and of course German specialties: Bratwurst, Currywurst and Glühwein!

Now Danish Glögg is something fantastic, and everyone should try it at least once, and the same goes for the hot Caipirinhas sold at Nytorv, but these aren’t for everyone. The ‘German Bratwurst’ cabin sells the most amazingly, deliciously, fantastically WOW Glühwein! Their mulled wine smells strong, tastes sweet, warms you up, and if you’re anything like me, will keep you coming back for more to the point where you have to drag yourself away to slow down a bit. Yes, it’s that good!

So head down Strøget from any of the main entries: Rådhuspladsen, Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv and lose yourself in the quaint but captivating International Christmas Market, before wandering the city looking for more markets…

For those who prefer to stay indoors in the cold, I found someone who lived outside of Copenhagen for several years, and now that she lives in California continues to make Danish Glögg and Æbleskivers for the Christmas season. A fantastic tradition that my family tries to stick to aswell, but that I can get here all winter (yes, they envy me, it’s great).
